The battle for America: An analysis of the 2020 election
Near the end of 2020 the US witnessed one of the tightest elections ever. When Donald Trump ran for president for his second consecutive term nobody believed he would become reelected but as the votes started to pile up in his favour people began to worry for the fate of their country.
The US election consists of 2 main parties: the “Democrats'' and the “Republicans”. The democrats are typically more on the liberal side whereas the republicans have a tendency to lean in the direction of being conservative. During the US election that took place in November of 2020 Joe Biden became the representative for the democrats and Donald Trump for the republicans.
Donald Trump’s main argument as to why he should be elected was that during his previous term as president there were lower unemployment rates, good stock market performance. He tried to use this to prove that he had created a healthy economy. He also promised to tighten immigration regulations, and build a wall along the Mexican border, to prevent illegal immigration. Whereas Joe Biden advocated for racial equity and social justice. He also talked a lot about climate change and how he promised to transition into using clean energy. This made the general population favour Joe Biden because his
views were more focused on what the media was talking about.
But Joe Biden didn't come without his fault. For example when he ran for presidency he was 78 years
old causing a lot of people to question if he was fit to be president. Donald Trump noticed this and attempted to capitalise off this by calling joe Biden names like “sleepy joe” the idea behind this was to make joe Biden seem lazy or unfit to be president. Joe Biden would counter these claims by criticising Donald Trump's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the fact that Donald Trump seemed
to downplay the severity of the virus, comparing it to the flu and even suggesting it was less severe.
Biden also mentioned that some of the policies that Donald Trump was planning to put in place
primarily benefited the already rich, further exaggerating the gap between the upper middle and
lower class.
Social media also leads to numerous fake rumours directed at both parties. These included the conspiracy that Donald Trump had worked together with Russia to interfere with the 2016 election.
Many also believed that Joe Biden was experiencing “cognitive decline” hence the nickname “sleepy Joe”.
Swing states also played a major role in the outcome of the election. Some of the more notable ones included Florida, Arizona, and Michigan. These states were so evenly divided that Donald Trump and
Joe Biden had to battle as hard as they could for these states knowing full well that if they didn't they could lose the entire election.
In conclusion the election proved itself to be one of the tightest and most notable elections in recent history. Donald Trump ended up losing the election to Joe Biden by 4% of the votes, totalling to 74,222,958 votes or in other words 46.8% of the total electoral votes. Whereas Biden ended up
tallying up 81,283,098 votes which totalling 51.3% of the election.
